Barley Varieties - 2011

Commander -  Malt. A malting quality variety with low to medium fermentability, suitable for domestic and some export brewing markets. Mid to late maturing. Plump grain size compared to other malting varieties. CCN resistant. May lodge under high yield conditions. First malting variety released following the formation of Barley Breeding Australia. Viterra.

Grout - Feed. Quick maturing variety with good grain size, suited to NNSW and Qld. Grout will mature up to two weeks earlier than Grimmett from a mid May to mid June plant. Grout is a vigorous seedling with a high tillering ability and erect growth habit. Grout is medium height with moderate levels of standability, better than Grimmett and similar to Mackay. Grout has good levels of resistance to powdery mildew and net form of net blotch. AWB Seeds.

Grimmett - Malt. A reliable malting variety for the northern region. Suitable for mid season and late plantings, particularly in western areas. Very good grain size. Consider seed treatment for net blotch and powdery mildew

Fitzroy - Malt. Medium to medium–late maturing variety with improved disease resistance over Gairdner, and acceptable grain size. Fitzroy is a semi-dwarf plant with good seedling vigour, medium in height and has good straw strength. Fitzroy is best suited to the northern NSW and Queensland barley growing areas. Best results will be achieved in more favourable environments where it should outperform Gairdner as a malting variety. AWB Seeds.

Shepherd - Feed. Slightly later maturing than Grout, but similar in growth habit with erect vigorous early growth. Suited to the medium rainfall areas of NNSW and Qld. Resistant to leaf rust and has improved resistance to powdery mildew over Gairdner, Fitzroy and Commander. Reasonable resistance to the net form of net blotch, similar to Commander and an improvement over Binalong, Grimmett, Mackay and Tallon. Susceptible to the spot form of net blotch. AWB Seeds.

Chickpea Varieties - 2011

HatTrick - New release Moderately resistant/resistant (MR/R) to Ascochyta, superior to Flipper. Moderately resistant (MR) to phytophthora root rot, more resistant than Jimbour but less than Yorker. High yielding variety across chickpea growing regions of northern NSW and southern QLD, recommended and suited to areas north of Parkes. Tall, erect plant type with mid-season maturity, equivalent to Jimbour. Medium sized desi seed suited to the direct human consumption market. Developed by Pulse Breeding Australia (PBA). Marketed by AWB Seeds with seed available through AWB Seeds agents.

Flipper - Ascochyta resistance better than Jimbour, Howzat and Yorker, meaning fewer or no sprays for this disease in average seasons. Suited to areas where Ascochyta is the greater risk. Moderately susceptible to moderately resistant to viruses, not available in other varieties except Gully. Tall, very good lodging resistance and medium sized seed. Bred by I&I NSW; commercial partner is AWB Seeds and seed is available through AWB Seeds agents.

Faba Bean Varieties - 2011

Doza - Released in 2008 for the northern grains region from central NSW to southern Queensland by Pulse Breeding Australia’s northern faba bean breeding node at Narrabri. Doza is significantly better adapted to warmer spring temperatures in the northern grains region than Barkool, Cairo and Fiord. Doza is higher yielding than Cairo, with improved rust resistance. Seed size is slightly smaller than Cairo, but more uniform with a light buff seed coat colour. It is not generally recommended for southern NSW where Ascochyta and chocolate spot are major problems. Commercialised under licence to Viterra and available through local seed suppliers.
